- Summary
- COI synopsis: Scientific and technological progress is self-defeating unless accompanied by increases in safety. This week, we look at examples of this progress aimed precisely at increasing the most important safety margin of all - human life. Oil transportation always carries with it a terrible fire risk. If, in the process of pumping it into juggernauts or rolling stock, a connecting pipe is broken, one stray spark may start a conflagration. Now if a coupling does break, an automatic shut-off in each half instantly closes down the flow.
