- Summary
- BFI synopsis: the N.C.B. Division’s amateur boxing finals at Durham.
NCB Commentary - Durham City Ice Rink was the scene of Durham NCB Division’s amateur boxing finals. It wasn’t a case of boxing on ice, but the rink was open to the public before and after the bouts.
A 2300 crowd turned up despite bad weather to cheer on their champions. To start with, here’s the light-heavyweight clash between Greathead of Twinell Burn and Norman Brown of Nurton. Brown’s a blacksmith at the colliery, and this may be his last season as an amateur. At all events, as a budding professional demands most of the pace and soon put Greathead down with a righthander for a count of eight. The bout didn’t go beyond the first round - with Greathead down again, the referee gave the fight to Brown on a Technical Knockout.
Now here are Tyres of Chopwell and Brown of Brandon Pit in a novice flyweight contect. This time Tyres took the fight to his opponent in whirlwind style. There was an early knockdown when Brown slipped by the ropes for a count of four, but Tyres didn’t waste any time in moving in to finish the bout. Wild punching from both men culminated in Tyres sending over a right which floored Brown for the full event. It’s all over.
Finally, here’s a featherweight bout between Eddie Hodgson of Craighead Oswald and Danny Henderson of New Brancepeth, both experienced amateurs. There was more pure boxing in this fight, and the men were evenly matched at nine stone. At the end of the 3-round contest, both men went back to their corners to wait the narrow points decision. The winner - Hodgson, who goes forward to the Nothern finals in Blackpool and then, perhaps, to the National Finals at Stoke on Trent in April. - Researcher Comments
