Summary
BFI synopsis: Manchester fuel efficiency exhibition held in the City Hall.
NCB Commentary - November in Manchester, and it looks like it, too. But it’s a bit brighter inside the City Hall, where a national fuel efficiency exhibition in taking place.
The Coal Board had a stand there, mainly concerned with modernising boiler houses. They’re doing a lot in that direction these days, with 4,000 boilers to look after at the nation’s collieries. For industry in general, new mechanical stokers were on show, as well as new ways of grading fuels for different purposes. New kinds of fuel to burn were there, as well as new ways of using low-grade coal.
New equipment for the home was well to the fore. There were fuel saving cookers and stoves and fires; and since household fires make so much of our smoke, the accent was on efficient smokeless fuels.
An exhibition like this does good in bringing home to everyone the importance of our fuel problems and in suggesting ways to overcome them.
