- Summary
- Rhodesian Spotlight Commentary - The arrival of kit and equipment from overseas gives a boost to the Rhodesian Sea Cadet Corps in Lusaka. Let’s see now, cap fits your head and three fingers, give him two sizes smaller. That’s better; don’t stand there all day.
Well, anyway 26 lads at present are learning the ropes. The RSCC was only formed three months ago and 120 are expected to join in the next six months. They learn rifle drill, naval ceremony history and traditions, as well as the other things good sailors should know - the first of which is that sailors don’t have to leave dry land to go aboard.
A launch has been loaded to teach the lads the rudiments of seamanship and navigation. They are all keen, some of them of course come from naval families and prefer shooting the sun to finding out where they are from a map. Whoops, beg pardon, a chart. The sea cadets, though afloat, come under the Army. Army quartermasters who struggle with nomenclature still don’t know their prow from their poop. We may smile indulgently at the Jungle Navy as it’s called but it’s the only Navy the Federation has got. - Keywords
