Episode Two - Power Struggles

Description
This second episode drives us through from the formation of the major Welsh kingdoms to the defeat of Owain Glyndwr. The Welsh are under attack from Vikings and Saxons, constantly realigning and making alliances to protect their security. But under great leaders like Rhodri Mawr and Hywel Dda, they have major military and diplomatic successes. The Norman Invasion and the creation of the March puts Wales under huge pressure but the great figure of The Lord Rhys enables the Welsh to develop their culture and economy. All the key Welsh leaders are well-connected, European figures. The heartland proves resilient right up to the 1280s and the crushing of the embryonic Welsh state in the defeat of Llywelyn the Last by Edward I of England. After the Black Death and the near-disappearance of Wales, the simmering resentments left by Edward’s conquest erupt in the revolt of Owain Glyndwr, the end of Welsh resistance.
