Summary
Airborne troops arrive by glider over Holland. Many crashed gliders and aircraft confirm the fact that losses are not light. On the road from Eindhoven men of the Second Army advance towards Nijmegen. The Nijmegen Bride has explosives removed from it by Royal Engineers. The charges were left unexploded when paratroops arrived and took the Germans unawares thus making them desert the bridge. Meanwhile, men of the 1st Airborne Division, who have gone without sleep for days, fight on, knowing that reinforcements are only a few miles south attempting to force a corridor between enemy lines. Many prisoners are taken and there are many wounded on both sides. But despite their successes the British have been unable to force a way through and as the Second Army went on to consolidate the considerable gains already won, the men of Arnhem got the order to retire across the Rhine. (After an heroic stand for 8 days on the Arnhem bridgehead, of the 6,500 troops involved in the operation, 2,000 have returned unwounded. Twelve hundred wounded had to be left behind and army doctors remained with them).
