- Summary
- Men of the 38th Chinese Division add artillery weight to the drive towards Mandalay. Close air co-operation comes from American dive bombers. Five hundred miles of hard fighting across Burma brought the British 14th within gun-range of the city. Enemy resistance was fierce and made the capture of Mandalay the costliest campaign of the whole Burma war. The Second British Division and the famous Indian 19th were first into Mandalay, together with their Commander, General Rees. Only small groups of Japanese prisoners are brought in, a noticeable change to the masses of captured Germans we are used to seeing. Among the regiments which took the city are the Berkshires, the Worcesters, British and Indian tank units and Gurkha and Punjabi infantry regiments.
