Summary
Exterior pictures of St Peter’s Rome, after which we follow the impressive ritual and pageantry of the great peacetime ceremonies of the Vatican for the creation by the Pope of the twenty-eight new cardinals. Princes of the Church from Britain, Canada, China, Australia, Armenia and many other lands assemble for the historic event. This ceremony is notable because it raises the Sacred College to its maximum number of seventy and also because, for the first time, the majority of the Cardinals are non-Italians. Background to the papal ceremony is provided by the colourful ceremonial of the Swiss and Palatine guards and the gentlemen of the papal guard in traditional dress. (Natural sound)
