Summary
Pathe synopsis: Egremont, Cumberland, too. It starts with the Parade of the Apple Cart when crab apples are thrown to the crowds, and continues with a host of ancient celebrations. There’s climbing the greasy pole - and Gurning, the art of pulling funny faces. There’s wrestling - and a pipe smoking contest. And there’s Hound Trailing, a dog race with a difference. A trail of aniseed is laid for up to ten miles and then the pack is let loose on the scent. Old customs it seems - like those proverbial old soldiers - never die.
