- MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Another Step Nearer Japan (Occupation of Saipan). DESCRIPTION: It was about the middle of June that strong American forces began the occupation of Saipan Island in the Marianas. The capital Garapan was quickly over run and the battle entered it’s final phase. The assault on Saipan brought out part of the Japanese navy and a sea battle inflicted heavy losses on them. SHOTLIST: Cut story - KS. GS of convoy at sea, dawn shot, also ships line ahead. Map of Marianas, shows Saipan, Truk, etc. GS convoy, line ahead etc. Shots of battleships & cruisers, shot of two aircraft carriers. Battleships & cruisers bombard island, various shots, also CU of triple guns firing, taken from all angles. LCIs approach beaches. LS of same. LS Saipan. American troops walk along beaches. Sherman tanks stationary, on beach. American soldier digs trench. Map. Yanks machine gunning from foxhole, LS valley. Firing mortars, explosions by same. GV of island of Saipan.
