- MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Clearing the Canal / First Tanker Via the Cape. DESCRIPTION: The work of clearing the Suez Canal is steadily going ahead. The 2,600 ton minelayer HMS Manxman, was the first ship to pass through the newly cleared channel. Danish troops for the United Nations Force arrived in Port Said under the command of Colonel Ingholm. From arrivals to departures - the French ship ‘La Marseillaise’, took some 200 members of the European Community away from Egyptian persecution. A Greek tanker arrived at the Kent Refinery on the Isle of Grain. She’s the first tanker to carry Middle East oil around the Cape, 28,000 tons of it from Kuwait. SHOTLIST: HMS Manxman in Suez Canal (first ship to go through Canal). Danish troops arrive by train in Port Said. European refugees (Jewish) being evacuated by ‘The Athina Livanos being pulled up the Thames by tugs to the Isle of Grain. Tanker at oil storage. Kent oil refinery - shots of men working pumps.
