Summary
COI synopsis: Certain scientific developments have an immediate appeal - an appeal based on their inherent elegance. This issue looks at four ideas in science which, echoing the elegance that dominates the natural world, offer us an "elegant solution". A weaving loom is the newest application for the linear electric motor - an elegantly simple motor with no moving parts. And in the latest development of the principle - the magnetic river - the elegance is doubled: one motor simultaneously propels and supports a vehicle floating on air.
