- COI synopsis: Our resources of fossil fuels are dwindling fast, yet our demands for energy seem to be ever increasing: bigger, thirstier planes; greater quantities of fuel burnt just to keep us warm; and more and more fuel greedy cars. This programme looks at some new ideas for reducing our overall energy needs, in the air, in the home, and on the roads. Build a car specially for use in town - small, light and manoeuvrable - and you can cut down on its fuel requirements. But out of town its small size becomes a limitation. A possible solution comes from a group of English schoolchildren: the "elastic" car. Add an extension, and the town car stretches into a family car; a different extension - and it’s big enough to carry a whole football team.
