Summary

COI synopsis: For thousands of years one of the most valuable insects has been the honeybee, farmed throughout the world for its yields of honey and beeswax. Today, it has an increasingly important role to play as the best fertiliser of crops, essential in newly-irrigated areas where insects are not naturally found. For such a small creature, it has created quite a stir, and recently a conference was held in London for world authorities to pool their experience on bees in hot climates. We hear from the experts themselves just how the bees bring their own expertise to bear in continuing to help man, as they have done since the beginning of agriculture.

Researcher Comments

The conference was called: "Apiculture in Tropical Climates" and was held at the Penta Hotel, in London. People featured include: Mr Kigatiira, head of beekeeping in Kenya, and Dr Eva Crane, Director of the International Bee Research Association.
