British Pathe synopsis: "Years and years ago when Great-grandma was a girl, washing day was the event of the week." M/S of a woman in old fashioned clothes standing outside washing clothes in a tub. C/U of her rubbing a garment against a washboard. She wipes her hands on her apron then stretches her aching back. "Grandma wore enough clothes to prove she was a perfect lady." The woman wipes her forehead with the back of her hand, sighs then carries on washing. M/S of the woman hanging her washing on the line. She pegs out some bloomers. "Monday morning’s line was a certificate of character and social standing." The woman walks beside her washing line. "Today, Eve does it just like this." C/U of a woman slipping off a dressing gown and stretching. She then slips down the straps of her camisole, lifts it up to show the camera and puts it down out of shot. "About ten ounces of silk preserves her social status." C/U of her feet in ostrich feather slippers. She slips off her knickers - we see this from the knee downwards. We then see her in a plush kimono standing in a bathroom washing her smalls in the sink. She shakes washing flakes from a little bottle into the water. "Swish, swish and it’s done - " C/U of the woman squeezing suds from her smalls. She sits on the side of the sink smoking a cigarette in a long holder as she does her washing! "What would Grandma think of this picture?" The woman takes a puff of her cigarette before hanging a bra up on a string attached to two light fittings. She poses by her underwear smoking. - Keywords
