- Summary
- BFI synopsis: by replacing three old-fashioned boiler houses with a new single modern one, Sheffield City General Hospital raises more heat with less coal
NCB Commentary - In Sheffield City General Hospital it’s not only warm in bed but throughout the buildings too - thanks to a brand new boiler house replacing three separate boiler houses almost 80-years old.
Coal from three neighbouring pits is tipped into overhead hoppers serving the four new boilers below.
Lord Robens was on hand for the opening.
There’s plenty of fire here, but no smoke. Each boiler is stoked automatically and nobody has to squint at the fires to see if they need another shoveful - control panels provide the answers.
And while the steam flows round the hospitals night and day, a periodic manual clearing of the grates starts the ash on it’s journey towards disposal.
By investing in these new boilers, the Sheffield Regional Hospital Board is saving over 800-tons of coal a year and at the same time raising more steam to put to additional uses.
It’s warmer inside - when it’s autumn outside and the temperature - like the leaves on the trees - is falling. - Keywords
