- Summary
- The battle for the Franc. France was teetering on the edge of economic disaster. The repercussions were quickly felt at home. The answer, it seemed, was to devalue the Franc and up-value the German Mark. But at an international Finance Meeting in Bonn, the Germans said, "No". General de Gaulle had yet to speak, but speculation made devaluation of the Franc almost a certainty. The General had other ideas. In a radio broadcast he told the French nation there would be no devaluation. The economy would be adjusted by stern domestic cut-backs.
