Summary
France said, "No". The General said, "I resign". After eleven years of leadership, President de Gaulle stepped down from office. Only months after braving one referendum, he went to his people again. This time the referendum vote was for or against constitutional reforms; but everyone knew it meant a vote of confidence. He lost, and quit.
