MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: News Items: Italy, India & America. DESCRIPTION: In Italy the weather has been holding up the advance, but General Montgomery has announced his intention of hitting the enemy a "colossal crack". In India Lord Wavell visits Calcutta to deal with the sub-continent’s serious food problem. In American people have been going to the polls to elect Senators, Judges and State Governors. SHOTLIST: Cut story - Italy. GS of pontoon across Volturno River, GS of fast flowing river. Couple of American soldiers into camera, battling against the wind & rain. Various shots of river; fast running water, also shots of American Engineers standing about on river banks in gale awaiting orders. Several shots of pontoon bridge in the building, shot of rushing river carrying away pontoon bridge, fade to town of Mondrogone, British troops advance through & over ruined buildings, sniping as they go. On hillside at Mondrogone, 3" mortars being fired, LS of explosions caused by same, very effective. India - Transport plane taxies across aerodrome. Wavell getting out greeted by Sir Thomas Rutherford (Acting Governor of Bengal). Introduced to Air Vice Marshal Williams (AOC Bengal) & others Government unnamed officials. Inspecting RAF Regiment Guard of Honour. GS of him with Lady Wavell. America - Interior shot buildings, shows people queuing up, various shots of other entering curtained booths, & leaving same, voting machines can be seen inside booths. MS of Thomas Dewey, Governor of New York voting; MS & CU Wendell Wilkie casting his vote, also of President Roosevelt. CU Roosevelt.
