Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Second Test at Lord’s (South Africa V England). 1st and 2nd Day Material. DESCRIPTION: People had to be turned away from Lord’s so great was the interest in the Second Test. As well as record crowds there were record scores on the pitch. SHOTLIST: KS Queues outside Lord’s. Various shots of queue. Traffic jams. Inside GV crowds seated. Norman Yardley and Alan Melville toss up. LS South Africa in field. LS Cyril Washbrook and Len Hutton batting. CU Bill Edrich missing a ball and nearly being stumped by Lindsay. SCU Edrich trying to get the necessary run to make his hundred. Edrich hesitant in between wickets. Edrich hits boundary to the off. Shots of South Africans fielding, including Viljeon and Melville. CUs of Denis Compton and Edrich batting. Compton scores his 200, acknowledging crowds cheers. Tuckett bowling, pan to Alec Bedser being clean bowled by Tuckett, wicket flies in all directions. Scoreboard at 554 for 8 wickets, Yardley declares. England go out to field, out of camera. Mitchell and Melville out to bat, pavilion in background. Mitchell batting. Melville batting. SCU Edrich bowling. SCU Bedser bowling. SCU Pope bowling. SCU DVP Wright bowling. SCU Hollies bowling. SCU Compton bowling. SCU Melville batting. Scoreboard at 167 for 2 wickets. End of day’s play. Cut-ins of crowds and pavilion. (Edrich and Compton off field at lunch undefeated - add to cut story).
