Summary
British Pathe Summary - How Dunlop tennis shoes are made - various processes.
British Pathe synopsis: Liverpool. M/S of crepe rubber being cut from a roll as a drum rotates. The rubber is then fed into a machine which makes the tread. C/U of machine which cuts out the soles. The rubber left over is held up to the camera to show the holes. A thick rubber substance is rolled onto canvas for the uppers. "Suzie’s sewing shoes now." reads an intertitle. We then see a C/U of a woman working at a sewing machine. High angle shot of the factory showing large number of women at work in cramped conditions. C/U of a woman sewing on some braiding. She holds her work up to the camera and smiles. C/U of a woman constructing a shoe on a wooden last. Dissolves are used between the various processes. She turns the shoe in her hands to check it. She smiles at the camera, puts the shoe back on the conveyor belt and picks up another last. L/S of bench stretching off into the distance with young girls busy at work. C/Us of various parts of the process. C/U of sole being stuck on. Shoes are finished and placed on a rack. The last stage involves "the great vulcanising cylinder" where 4,000 pairs are dealt with at once. M/S of large rack of shoes being wheeled into the cylinder. The door is closed and an elderly man makes notes. L/S of the cylinder. "No "foot faults" with Dunlop Shoes" reads an intertitle. M/S of a woman playing tennis then C/U of her feet in Dunlop tennis shoes.
